Amazon AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) stands as a comprehensive and evolving cloud computing platform. Launched in 2006, AWS offers a wide array of services, including compute power, storage, and networking, along with various other tools to support a diverse set of applications and use cases.

What is AWS?

At its core, AWS provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies, and governments. Pay-as-you-go pricing means users pay for the resources they use without long-term contracts or upfront expenses.

Compute Services

One of the most prominent AWS services is Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). It allows users to rent virtual servers, called instances, on which to run their own applications. Users can choose from a variety of instance types, optimized for different purposes, such as compute-optimized or memory-optimized instances.

AWS Lambda offers a serverless computing model, in which users can execute code without provisioning or managing servers. Code runs in response to events, simplifying the development process and reducing operational costs.

Storage Services

Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) is a scalable object storage service. It stores and retrieves any amount of data from anywhere on the web. Users can store individual files, called objects, within buckets and configure permissions for accessibility and security.

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides block-level storage for use with EC2 instances. It is designed for workloads that require persistent storage, such as databases and file systems.

Amazon Glacier offers low-cost archival storage for data that is infrequently accessed. Ideal for long-term backups and archival storage, it provides secure and durable storage at a fraction of the cost of traditional options.

Networking and Content Delivery

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) enables users to provision logically isolated sections of the AWS cloud, where they can launch resources in a virtual network they define. Users have full control over the network configuration, including IP address ranges, subnets, and routing tables.

Amazon Route 53 is a scalable Domain Name System (DNS) service that translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses. It supports various routing policies to control the flow of traffic to different endpoints.

Amazon CloudFront distributes content globally with low latency and high transfer speeds. It delivers web content, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images, from servers located near end users.

Database Services

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) supports multiple database engines, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle. It simplifies database administration tasks, such as backups, patching, and scaling, allowing developers to focus on their applications.

Amazon DynamoDB is a fully managed NoSQL database service. It provides fast and predictable performance with seamless scaling. It is ideal for applications requiring low-latency data access.

Amazon Redshift is a data warehousing service designed for large-scale data analytics. It allows users to run complex queries against petabytes of structured data, delivering fast query performance using columnar storage and parallel query execution.

Developer Tools

AWS CodeCommit is a source control service that hosts Git repositories. It allows teams to securely store and manage their source code, streamline version control, and collaborate on code changes.

AWS CodeBuild is a fully managed build service that compiles source code, runs tests, and produces deployable artifacts. It scales continuously and processes multiple builds concurrently.

AWS CodeDeploy automates code deployments to any instance, whether on AWS or on-premise. It helps deploy application updates without downtime, ensuring high availability.

AWS CodePipeline is a continuous integration and delivery service. It helps manage the release process with automation, allowing users to build, test, and deploy code with speed and reliability.

Management and Governance

AWS CloudFormation enables users to define and provision infrastructure as code. Templates written in JSON or YAML describe the resources needed, and CloudFormation takes care of the provisioning and configuration.

AWS CloudWatch monitors resources and applications. It collects monitoring and operational data, providing insights to optimize performance, detect anomalies, and set alarms for automated action.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) helps control access to AWS resources. Users can create and manage AWS users and groups and use permissions to allow or deny their access to resources.

AI and Machine Learning

Amazon SageMaker is a fully managed service for building, training, and deploying machine learning models. It provides a modular interface for orchestrating every step of the machine learning workflow.

Amazon Lex is a service for building conversational interfaces using voice and text. It provides the tools to create chatbots with sophisticated natural language understanding.

Amazon Rekognition enables image and video analysis using deep learning. It can identify objects, people, text, scenes, and activities, making it useful for a variety of use cases.

Security and Compliance

AWS Shield offers protection against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. It provides always-on detection and automatic inline mitigations.

AWS Key Management Service (KMS) enables users to create and manage cryptographic keys. It integrates with other AWS services to simplify encryption and key management.

AWS WAF is a web application firewall that helps protect against common web exploits. It allows users to create rules to filter and monitor HTTP and HTTPS requests.

Internet of Things (IoT)

AWS IoT Core connects devices to the cloud, handling the communication between them. It supports standard protocols and provides a central management interface.

AWS IoT Greengrass extends cloud capabilities to local devices. It allows devices to act locally on the data they generate, while interacting with the cloud for management, analytics, and durable storage.

AWS IoT Analytics processes and analyzes data from IoT devices. It provides the tools to run sophisticated analytics on massive volumes of data.

Migration and Transfer

AWS Migration Hub helps track and manage the migration process to AWS. It provides a central hub for tracking the status and progress of migrating applications and workloads.

AWS Snowball is a data transfer service that allows users to move large amounts of data into and out of AWS using physical storage devices. It helps eliminate network constraints and reduce data transfer costs.

AWS DataSync automates data transfer between on-premises storage and AWS. It simplifies the process of moving large datasets and keeps them synchronized.
